Supplements to Improve Brain Health
Even with all of our medical studies, the brain is still a source of mystery. The senses are processed in different parts of the brain and in imaging studies different areas "light up" for functions such as emotion or memory recall. Depression, elevated mood and even a person's entire personality can be altered by physical injury to the brain or by chemicals, both naturally occurring and artificial. While only 5% of adults in the United States have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness that dramatically impacts their functionality, 13% seek treatment for a mental health concern each year and an immeasurable number may avoid treatment. We also know that who we are as people is stored in and determined by our brain and nothing seems to frighten us more than the possibility of losing our mind.
Interestingly enough, the brain is one of the only organs that also comes with a significant stigma. If something is wrong with your kidney and you seek treatment you are met with sympathy from family and friends. If a coworker or distant associate is in the hospital for an illness or injury, it feels appropriate to send cards or flowers. The same can't be said for those suffering with mental illness. A prearranged lie is given to work, friends and extended family while immediate family only are aware that the patient needed psychological evaluation. We as a society put so much focus on mental health as part of our self concept and fear mental problems so greatly that we choose denial and shame over treatment.
It can be hard to think and nearly impossible to remember anything when you have a minor illness such as a cold or the flu. There is a fog around everything in your mind and it's as though the world is moving at super speed and you are too slow to catch up. Now think about the way you felt on your mentally strongest day. It might have been a political debate with family, a class discussion in college or your turn to present at a book club. That day for just a moment you stepped outside of yourself and thought, "I am really smart," and it felt wonderful. If you had a choice, wouldn't you rather be at your mental best than feeling foggy, sluggish and lost? Click here to learn more: procera avh
Doctors are always talking about a heart-healthy lifestyle. We choose foods and vitamins to keep our cholesterol down and our immune system up. Joint function and bone density replacement have their own specialized supplements. However, there seems to be much less drive to take a regular supplement to improve memory and brain health.
There are dietary supplements available that claim to do just that. Giving your body every chance it can to stay healthy, extra vitamins are a pro-active way to face the statistics. Vitamin and health food stores can make recommendations and an online search can offer more information as well. If your personality is in your brain, that heart-healthy lifestyle can keep blood flowing but the brain is what truly makes you who you are.
